POETRY IN GOLDEN OLDIES-PART XI

Today is Makar Sankranti Day.
When I was posted in Baroda by my Bank (1980 to 1986) I had enjoyed flying kites on the terrace of my house on this day.Gujaratis celebrate this festival with full vigour and vitality. The entire family will go up the terrace with lots of packed items of “khana-peena” and music systems to have fun while flying kites .Shouts of “Kaatteeeyyeey ….” reverberate the rooftops when someone’s kite is cut. I miss that revelery here.Looting cut kites which came flying on to our rooftops was another enjoyable aspect. In tune with the motion of a flying kite,is another similar motion.Yes,that of a rocking boat .Hence my next stop on my journey to poetry in Golden Oldies is a very good composition, sung soulfully, picturised at night (probably) on a BOAT.The song has very melodious music.I enjoy it immensely whenever I hear it.I am sure that once I post this song ,many MUSE-icians will have a very high recall value of this immortal song.
Yes, I am going to talk about ” AJEEB DASTAAN HAI YEH !!”
It is from :”Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai”- a 1960 Hindi movie, produced by S. A. Bagar and directed by Kishore Sahu.
The film stars Raaj Kumar, Meena Kumari, Nadira, Tun Tun, Helen and Om Prakash. The film’s music is by Shankar Jaikishan. One of the most famous songs in the film is “Ajeeb Dastaan Hai Yeh” sung by Lata Mangeshkar. Its Lyrics are by Shailendra. The wordings of the song are as under :

Ajeeb daastaan hain yeh,
Kahaan shuru kahaan khatam.
Yeh manzilein hain kaun see,
Naa woh samajh sake naa hum.

Yeh roshnee key saath kyon,
Dhuwaan uthhaa chiraag sey
Yeh khwaab dekhatee hoon main,
Key jagg padee hoon khwaab sey

Mubaarakein tumhein ke tum
Kisee key noor ho gaye.
Kisee key itane paas ho,
Ke sab se door ho gaye.

Kisee kaa pyaar le ke tum
Nayaa jahaan basaaoge
Yeh shaam jab bhee aayegee,
Tum hum ko yaad aaoge

Here’s my effort at translation:

WHAT A CURIOUS STORY IS THIS,
I DON’T KNOW WHERE IT BEGINS
AND WHERE IT ENDS !!
WHAT ARE THE PINNACLES OF THIS STORY ?
NEITHER HE COULD UNDERSTAND…..
NOR ME…..

WHEN A LAMP LIGHTS UP
WHY DOES IT EMIT SMOKE TOO
ALONG WITH THE BRIGHTNESS IT CREATES ?
WHENEVER I SEE THIS HORRIBLE NIGHTMARE,
I WAKE UP SUDDENLY FROM THE EXPERIENCE !!

WHAT A CURIOUS STORY IS THIS…..!

CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU FOR
BECOMING THE LIGHT OF SOMEONE ELSE’S LIFE !
YOU WERE SO NEAR TO SOMEONE ( ME ? )
THAT NOW SUDDENLY YOU HAVE GONE FAR
FAR AWAY FROM EVERYBODY !!

WHAT A CURIOUS STORY IS THIS……!

YOU WILL CARRY SOMEONE’S LOVE NOW
AND CREATE A NEW WORLD OF YOUR OWN !!
BUT WHENEVER I SHALL THINK OF THIS EVENING,
I SHALL BE REMEMBERING YOU ALWAYS !!

WHAT A CURIOUS STORY IS THIS….?

Hope you will enjoy this song on Youtube ! Have a nice day. Try the following link ( Click on it and see,or copy and paste it in the address bar and see.)

    Jitoo Sir,
By the time I read the last line in all your postings, I find myself in a new world of imagination and I get deeply involved for sometime. It happens to me most of the time. This time again the same, but I really don’t know how to fly a kite. But I present them to the small children in our neighbourhood and enjoy. Best wishes.

A superb classic Jitoo. But first I thought you must have posted the song from Bhabhi, sung by Mohamd Rafi and Lata, picturised on Nanda and Jagdeep (?): Chali chali re patang meri chali re, chali badalon ke par, ho ke dor pe savar, sari duniya ye dekh dekh jali re…

    Dear Brocaji,

Happy Sankrati to you and your family. Baroda I was there for 6 months from June-Dec. 1991. I spend six months after my marriage in India. Now I will have to spend the Dec.-June to see Sankrati and Holi, etc…

Wow I enjoyed watching this song. I have seen most of the movies but I do not recall this one. Raj Kumar and Meena Kumari, what a great pair. Nice poem nice composition. Especially like the part, “where to beginning , where to end.” Is this not the question within our own lives? Mystery hai truly. Regards to you,

Dear Dr Pooja ji, Thanks for your lovely feedback. Flying a kite is a bit tricky but not that difficult. I learnt it when I was in Std V or VI. You require at least two persons of you want to fly it accurately.

Dear Shernaz, thanks for you comments. Yes, you are right, the ocassion was apt for a song on Patangs (kites). The song had been hovering in my mind since about a week or so but the final shape of the posting took place on Sankranti eve so I thought of somehow linking the kite’s motion in the wind with the motion of a boat in the water. I hope you must have enjoyed this black and white song of yesteryears. All the best dear.

    Dear Linaji

I thank you for your response. Kite flying on Makar Sankranti day in Gujarat, is nothing short of mania. I also have very happy memories of my stay, study, hostel etc in Baroda. It is a beautiful city. As regards this song “Ajeeb Dastaan…” it is a very popular song amongst lovers of oldies.
