POETRY IN GOLDEN OLDIES –PART VII

Dear Readers,

Seeing to the wonderful response to my earlier postings,I have been motivated to continue this journey into the Golden Oldies of Hindi films.

Today,I intend to take up the famous song :

” AI MERI ZOHRAAJABEEN ….” from that memorable movie of 1965–“WAQT”

The song has been wonderfully sung by Manna Dey in his inimitable style.Music is by Ravi, while lyrics are by Sahir Ludhanvi.I vividly recall this song even  today at the age,of 59.I have sung it in various family functions ( for my wife, specially) and in marriages  of friends and relatives much to the delight of listeners.I am very sure many of the readers still cherish the memories of this evergreen romantic number picturised beautifully on the versatile actor of yester-years–Balraj Sahni and his wife in the movie–Achla Sachdev, another eminent actress of those times.Their mutual admiration and chemistry are to be seen and believed.Their coy glances at each other full of passion.are what fantasies are made up of !

The lyrics of the song are as under:

” AI  MERI ZOHRA JABEEN ”

 TUJHE MALOOM NAHIN,

TU ABHI TAKK HAI HASEEN

AUR MAIN JAWAAN,

TUJH PEY KURBAAN MERI JAAN..!”

 I attempt a translation herebelow :

” OH MY BEAUTIFUL BELOVED ,

YOU DON’T SEEM TO KNOW IT

BUT  I KNOW THAT YOU ARE

    STILL SO LOVELY TO BEHOLD,

AND,AS FOR ME,I AM STILL SO YOUNG

THAT, I CAN EVEN LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU !”

First verse :

YEH SHOKHEEAAN , YEH BAANKPANN,

 JO  TUJH MEIN HAIN,KAHEEN NAHIN.

 DILLON KO JEETNE KAA FANN,

 JO TUJH MEIN HAI,KAHEEN NAHIN.

MAIN TERI,MAIN TERI

AANKHON MEIN PAA GAYA DAU JAHAN !

 AI MERI ZOHRAA JABEEN………”

My translation of above verse :

THIS COYNESS AND THE BODY LANGUAGE (SMARTNESS)

THAT YOU STILL HAVE IN YOU, ARE REALLY UNIQUE

( ONLY YOU HAVE THEM )

THIS ART OF WINNING OVER OTHERS’ HEARTS,

THAT YOU STILL HAVE,   IN YOU,

IS AGAIN UNIQUE ( ONLY YOU HAVE IT )

I HAVE FOUND BOTH MY WORLDS ( HEAVEN AND EARTH )

 IN YOUR LOVELY  EYES .

OH MY BEAUTIFUL BELOVED…….”

 Second Verse :

JO MEETHE BOL JAAN-E-MANN

 MUSKURRA KEY BOLE DEY,

TAU DHADHKANON MEIN AAJ BHI,

 SHARABI RANG GHOL DEY.

 O SANAM,O SANAM,

MAIN TERA AASHIQ-E-JAAVINDAAN ,

AI MERI ZOHRAA JABEEN…….”

My translation of above :

WHEN YOU SMILE AND SAY SOMETHING SWEET TO ME,

IT INTOXICATES THE BEATS OF MY HEART

( MY HEART STARTS RACING !)  EVEN TODAY.

 MY DARLING, MY DARLING ,

I AM STILL IN  LOVE WITH YOU !!

 OH MY BEAUTIFUL BELOVED ………

I’LL DIE FOR YOU MOST GLADLY (ANY TIME) (EVEN TODAY !)…..”

I hope you will agree with my opinion about this song. Those of you who would like to see the song on YOUTUBE, please visit my blog :  http://seeingwithc.org/jsblog, or watch it directly on YouTube.

    Jitoo Sir,
A highly intoxicating song with a nice translation…I tried to sing the translation also in the same tune and enjoyed it….It’s one of my favourites…I was missing some melodies for some time on ‘Your Space’…Thanks for adding the tunes again…Looking forward for many more songs from your collection…Best regards…

I am myself a great music buff, especially the music of golden era of 50s & 60s. I am happy to note that you are so much passionate about the songs of that era that you have endeavoured to do a beautiful translation. Manna Dey was at his best in this rendition with the shayari of Sahir being as evergreen as ever. I am imagining how your wife would have been reacting to your singing the song in family functions.

  3. Dear Pujaji
Thanks for your feedback. Sometime back ( I think on 14th December) I had submitted a piece on a similar theme to Muse. The editor did not post it. He was of the view that such “filmy” postings are not good enough since Muse is a literary magazine. I have given them a befitting reply and told them to hold an open debate on this topic.
If you wish I can send you the e-mails exchanged between me and Muse so that like minded readers can discuss this aspect and take it up with Muse. Send me an e-mail (jsbroca@yahoo.com). Keep tuned. Golden oldies will live for ever. “Aakhir dill hai Hindustaani ” hai naa??

  5. Dear Shri Amar Nath ji,
Thanks for your feedback. My wife also enjoys some rare moments of undivided attention from me during such family functions!! Like you many of my other friends in my office and in our circle appreciate such beautiful songs of yester years and during get-togethers most often “farmaish” is for singing such golden oldies.

  6. Lina Mistry/Tandel says:

    Dear Brocaji,
With our family while setting the table for dinner I would hum or sing a line of a song, usually Oldies. And my family members, my parents, husband and siblings guess on which movie the song is from. It is a lot of fun. The old songs draws the family closer. My dad is the most challenging for me. So I try to make it harder for him, cheating to find some songs from Youtube.
Happy New Year to you and your family. Regards,
