Another Letter To Business Today

Dear Sir,

This refers to the smartly printed and presented 25th Anniversary Issue of BT with the cover story titled: Towards A Smarter India. The voluminous issue lovingly compiled with worth-reading articles on topics related to new technologies and innovative routes to drive India towards smartness in various fields, like Governance, Infrastructure, Transport, Agriculture, Banking and Healthcare etc, was a mind-blowing issue from cover to cover. A BIG THANK YOU to the Editorial Team of BT!

However, SMART-ness parameters need to be well defined and outlined before one thinks of going ahead.  Whenever academicians and professionals discuss smartness parameters in B-Schools, they usually touch upon the acronym S.M.A.R.T, which has several different variations, to be used for providing a more comprehensive definition of goal setting:

S    – specific, significant, stretching

M   – measurable, meaningful, motivational

A – agreed upon, attainable, achievable, acceptable, action-oriented

R  – realistic, relevant, reasonable, rewarding, results-oriented

T  – time-based, time-bound, timely, tangible, trackable

Many management experts have further elaborated on the topic of SMART Goals as under: SPECIFIC meaning well defined and clear to anyone who has the basic knowledge of projects; MEASURABLE meaning knowing if the goal is obtainable within a reasonable time span and how far away its actual completion is, finding out when one has  achieved one’s goals; AGREED UPON meaning agreement with all the stakeholders (Government, Public, Agencies etc) as to what the goals should be; REALISTIC meaning within the availability of all the resources ( the basic Five Ms- ie. men, money, machines, materials, methods)  within the country, knowledge and time schedules for implementation; TIME-BASED meaning having enough time to achieve the goals and not too much time, which can affect performance.

Let us hope for the best smartness in all areas in times to come!!

One observation however needs to be made about announcing and giving regular prizes for Best Letters from your esteemed readers, since like the much-touted Brand category of SMART Phones these days, SMART READERS also go to make a magazine like BT a SMART MAGAZINE ! Agree?

    MY LETTER IN BUSINESS TODAY
    ISSUE DATED FEB 12 2017
    Anniversary Issue: Quite Mind-blowing
This refers to your 25th Annivesary Issue of Business Today (January 15). Compiled with worth-reading articles on new technologies and innovative routes to drive India towards becoming a smart nation in various spheres / fields like governance, infrastructure, transport, agriculture, banking and health care, etc., the edition was quite mind-blowing. But here the “smartness” parameters need to be well defined. Whenever academicians discuss smartness parameters in B-schools, they usually touch upon the acronym SMART, which has different variations, used for providing a more comprehensive definition of setting goals – S: specific, significant, and stretching; M: measurable, meaningful, and motivational; A: achievable, acceptable, and action-oriented; R: realistic, relevant, reasonable, and result-oriented; T: time-bound and tangible. Let us hope for the best smartness in all areas in times to come.
