My comments on a Cover Story on “START-UPs”

MY RESPONSE TO BT COVER STORY IN BT ISSUE DATED 21ST JUNE 2015
Dear Sir,
Your latest annual survey on “India’s Coolest Start-Ups” (BT 21ST JUNE 2015) listing the Top Ten winners in two categories, was an excellent compilation effort by your Team!
It made fascinating reading about the New Generation Entrepreneurs-their guts, their gumption, their single-minded purpose and their focused vision and mission for their entrepreneurship ventures.
Some interesting facts emerged from the cover stories of these entrepreneurs:
1. Their ages are in the range of twenties and thirties.
2.   Their risk-taking capacities are huge and fearless.
3.  Their products / services cater to newer emerging segments in tune with the new technologies and their applications.
4. Their willingness to innovate, to experiment and daring to enter into hitherto uncharted courses of businesses.
As rightly pointed out in the Editorial, most of such new start-ups will fizzle out into oblivion and close down soon as a result of their doubtful technical feasibility and uncertain economic viability.
Only a selected few out of this ‘herd’ will survive and carve out their own new niches in this tough arena of competition to create their success stories and become case study material in the exalted portals of B- Schools in near future.
Yes, the spirit of adventure of these guys needs to be appreciated but at the same time, abundant caution needs to be exercised by bankers, VCs and angel investors to ensure that huge funds are not gobbled up by risky propositions, adding to highly shocking levels of mounting levels of NPAs in the banking and financial sectors.
