MY LETTER IN B.T WINS BEST LETTER PRIZE

MY LETTER  IN BUSINESS TODAY WINS BEST LETTER PRIZE

MY LETTER TO BUSINESS TODAY ON MARCH 14TH 2014 WINS BEST LETTER PRIZE (Gift vouchers worth Rs.1000/- from LIFESTYLE) AS MENTIONED ON THE LETTERS PAGE OF THE LATEST ISSUE OF BT DATED 13TH APRIL 2014 JUST OUT ON TE STANDS TODAY.

On reading the story on Rahul Gandhi, this is what I had written by way of a letter to the editor of BT:

Dear Sir,

Your story on Rahul Gandhi in BT dated 30th March 2014 (Lost in communication) was well presented. However, in today’s marketing scenario, the earlier old so-called  “Four Ps” (Product, Promotion, Place and Price) of Marketing are now  actually new “Seven Ps” (add three more Ps: People, Process and Physical Evidence). “People” pertains to Rahul’s staff and employees. It is generally felt that they are quite raw and un-trained and lack knowledge about out-of-the-box thinking in today’s competitive environment and are hardly empowered to take innovative steps, needed for deep market penetration. “Process” stands for the ways and means adopted to reach the customers (the electorate here). Social Media today is one important part of the process but sadly enough, Rahul is not present there. “Physical Evidence” refers to the concrete deliverables of promised benefits to the common man who votes the party to power. Good governance, availability of necessary infra-structural facilities, poverty reduction, inflation control, jobs creation and secular social fabric are some of such evidences. It remains to be seen whether Rahul successfully markets his party or not. Mere “celebrity” endorsement through Rahul’s lip-service, is not likely to successfully market the party and win the election war  or race, since BJP appears to be a strong competitor.

Brand Managers, Brand Consultants, students of MBA (where Brand Management is one subject) and general public will all be closely watching this huge jamboree of coming elections. Let us see which way the cookie crumbles!

Seven “Ps”, Not Four

Your feature on Rahul Gandhi (Lost In Communication, March 30) was well presented. However, in today’s business scenario, the age old marketing formula of “Four Ps” (Product, Promotion, Place and Price) has been replaced by “Seven Ps” (with three more Ps: People, Process and Physical evidence). “People” should pertain to Rahul’s staff. It is felt that they are untrained and hardly empowered to take innovative steps – necessary for deep market penetration. ”Process” stands for the ways and means adopted to reach customers (in this case, the electorate).Social media today is an important part of the process, but sadly, Rahul is not present there. “Physical evidence” refers to the concrete deliverables of promised benefits to the common man who votes a party to power. Good governance, availability of necessary infrastructural facilities, inflation control, jobs creation and a secular social fabric are some of these. It remains to be seen whether Rahul successfully markets his party or not. Mere “celebrity endorsement” through Rahul’s lip-service won’t help his party and win the poll race, since the BJP appears to be a strong competitor. Let us see which way the cookie crumbles.
