Water on the moon…

Water on the moon !!

Asking for the moon

The recent news from ISRO and NASA,about there being water on the moon, and especially after the photographs revealed by our own Chandrayan -I mission, being splashed in the media,it has become a hot topic for debate.
Lovers,scientists,poets,philosophers,shayars et all – have once again started waxing eloquent on their pet topic- the MOON ! Here is what I read in a reputed daily :
The moon remains a mystery even today. Gazed at by poets and lovers, intensely studied by astronomers for several centuries, examined by geologists for the last 50 years, visited by more than 50 spacecrafts, and walked upon by twelve humans, the moon hasn’t lost its capacity to throw us a surprise or two. The recent finding of Chandrayaan-1, that the surface of the lunar soil is not bone dry but reasonably wet, is astounding to say the least. It is not as if we did not expect any water on its surface; or that we have found substantial pools of liquid water. We could squeeze out a teaspoon of water from several kilograms of the moon’s soil, at best. However, that water is so widespread on the surface, mixed in the minerals that make up lunar dirt, especially the top millimeter of soil, was totally unexpected. Water appears all over the moon — from cratered highlands to deep cavities and darker plains. Given earlier assumptions, this find is startling.

I surfed on the internet and this is what I gathered from a write up in Wikipedia:

Water from the Moon
“Water from the Moon” is a song from Céline Dion’s eponymous album. It was commercially released on March 1, 1993 as the fifth single in the United States. In Canada it was a radio single only.”Water from the Moon” was written by Diane Warren and produced by Guy Roche, with additional production by Walter Afanasieff. Diane Warren did also the background vocals.Two music videos were made for this song. The first one is entirely in black-and-white. Later, they modified the video to include additional footage of Céline Dion, colored brownish-yellow.”Water from the Moon” had a moderate success on the adult contemporary format. The song reached number 11 on Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks in the United States and number 13 on the Canadian Contemporary Hit Radio Chart. According to Nielsen SoundScan the single has sold 45,000 copies in the U.S.

The Lyrics of this song are as under :
I’ve looked everywhere I can
Just to find a clue
Oh to get to you
And make you want me
And I’ve run circles around the sun
Chasin’ after you
Oh but it’s no use
Can’t you see that I’m going out of my mind
Trying to find a way to get through to you
Oh you don’t know how hard I try
And I try and I try
What do I gotta do

Do I gotta get water from the moon
Is that what I gotta do
To make you love me
Make you love me
Do I gotta turn the sand into the sea
Is that what you want from me
I’ve done everything that I can do
But get water from the moon

I’ve reached high up in the sky
Tryin’ to steal the stars
Oh to win your heart
But even that’s not enough
And I’ve searched every book I know
Just to find the words
Oh to touch your world and get some love out of you
I’ve already given all I can give
And I don’t know what’s left to try
And I try and I try
What do I gotta do

Do I gotta get water from the moon, , ,
Love me, how do I make you love me
How do I make you see that I’m going out of my mind
(Solo)
I try, and I try, and I try
(Chorus)

Isn’t it fascinating to note that the writer and singer knew as long back as in 1993, about there being water on the moon ? And as for poems on the Moon, there are so many,that this space is not sufficient to make a mention,but yet,here are some of them selected at random:
A Poem :
moon, moon, crazy moon
moon, moon, crazy moon
natural moon
torn apart and snoozing moon;
lovely moon, romantic moon
poor poor moon
the romance
plucked out of its drab surface;
moon moon going wild
moon moon running away
from the earth –
O moon, why do you run away from the earth?
does earth touch you in the wrong places
and you’ve got no body
to which one could lodge
a complaint about sexual harassment? ?
ah, moon moon, temperamental moon
dark moon
glowing moon;
sexy moon
and old-woman hag of a moon;
moon moon with the best views of the earth
moon moon moon
puts me to sleep and wakes me up
in the middle of nights;
and one day we’ll sleep in the moon
and produce babies there
and we’ll have the first moon-ish boys and girls
and moon-ly families;
but meanwhile
moon moon driving fanatics
and inspiring love and romance and myths
moon moon eerie moon
moon moon that presides over love and horrors
and evil and good
and naked witches dancing in moonlit groves;
pooor moon moon the earth moon
not as interesting and dramatic as other moons;
don’t get too friendly and dropp in –
oh, never drop in, no one invited you
silly mooon, no no, you’re not invited home to earth
moon moon cheese moon eaten by mice:
but still our dear moon darling moon
moon mooon
our very own earth’s moon
as we moo moo like cows
moo moo moo mooo
at our own moon moon moon
(By : Raj Arumugam)
I was also reminded of a popular nursery rhyme from my school days :
Hey diddle diddle,
The cat and the fiddle,
The cow jumped over the moon;
The little dog laughed to see such sport,
And the dish ran away with the spoon
.
(-A nursery rhyme from the 1700’s)

Another poem by the noted poet Shelley :
TO THE MOON :
Art thou pale for weariness
Of climbing heaven and gazing on the earth,
Wandering companionless
Among the stars that have a different birth,
And ever changing, like a Joyless eye
That finds no object worth its constancy?
(By Percy Bysshe Shelley) (1792-1822)
Yet another one :
We’ll Go No More A-Roving
Though the night was made for loving
And the day returns too soon
Yet we’ll go no more a-roving
By the light of the moon
(-Lord Byron)
Still one more….
THE HALF MOON SHOWS
A FACE OF PLAINTIVE SWEETNESS
:
The half moon shows a face of plaintive sweetness
Ready and poised to wax or wane;
A fire of pale desire in incompleteness,
Tending to pleasure or to pain:-
Lo, while we gaze she rolleth on in fleetness
To perfect loss or perfect gain.
Half bitterness we know, we know half sweetness;
This world is all on wax, on wane:
When shall completeness round time’s incompleteness,
Fulfilling joy, fulfilling pain?-
Lo, while we ask, life rolleth on in fleetness
To finished loss or finished gain.
( By: Christina Rossetti)
Another cute little nursery rhyme :
I see the moon,
The moon sees me
God bless the moon,
And God bless me.
Poems by Walter de la Mare were also my favourites ones in my school days :  eg :
FULL MOON :
One night as Dick lay fast asleep,
Into his drowsy eyes
A great still light began to creep
From out the silent skies.
It was the lovely moon’s, for when
He raised his dreamy head,
Her surge of silver filled the pane
And streamed across his bed.
So, for a while, each gazed at each-
Dick and the solemn moon-
Till, climbing slowly on her way,
She vanished, and was gone.
(By: Walter de la Mare)
Sleepyhead :
As I lay awake in the white moon light,
I heard a faint singing in the wood,
‘Out of bed,
Sleepyhead,
Put your white foot now,
Here are we,
Neath the tree
Singing round the root now!’
I looked out of window, in the white moon light,
The trees were like snow in the wood–
‘Come away,
Child, and play
Light with the gnomies;
In a mound,
Green and round,
That’s where their home is.
Honey sweet,
Curds to eat,
Cream and frumenty,
Shells and beads,
Poppy seeds,
You shall have plenty.’
But soon as I stooped in the dim moon light
To put on my stocking and my shoes,
The sweet sweet singing died sadly away,
And the light of the morning peeped through:
Then instead of the gnomies there came a red robin
To sing of the buttercups and dew.
(By- Walter de la Mare)

NEW MOON :
The new moon, of no importance
lingers behind as the yellow sun glares
and is gone beyond the sea’s edge;
earth smokes blue;
the new moon, in cool height above the blushes,
brings a fresh fragrance of heaven to our senses.
(By- D.H. Lawrence) (1885-1930)

Once In a Blue Moon :
True love, like the blue moon, only comes now and then
It comes unexpected, you never know when
That “someone” so special, who’s meant just for you
Will enter your life, make your world feel brand new.
Be patient, my heart, be patient  and strong
For just once in a blue moon real love comes along.
“Once in a blue moon! That’s too much to ask
I want to be loved, I need it, in fact.”
Be patient, my heart, for haste makes regret
Just once in a blue moon…the time isn’t yet.
“I want lasting love” (said my heart) “so I have to agree
A once-in-a-blue-moon love is for me.”

So I waited and hoped for that special “someone”
Praying someday my soul mate would come
Wishing for love that would always be true
I never dreamed that someone was you…
Then out of the blue, our love began
True love, like the blue moon, only comes now and then.

Yes,of course,some haikus too…

the horned moon
a finger nail of silver
in a velvet sky
tonight I saw her
an ivory dinner plate
bordered by peachlight

following the road
the moon winked at me last night
like the cheshire cat
(By-Alison Cassidy)

Now, after having read and digested what I have posted above,my own take for the present, is as under :

1. What next ?
May be we will find some oil wells there too ? Well, isn’t that loud thinking ? Just imagine you/me owning an oil well there !
2. What more ?
Perhaps some of our shrewed politicians will add this point in their next election manifesto :” One lakh 100 sq feet plots for persons belonging to BPL category to be reserved on the moon for slum dwellers in India !”
3. Further :
We may soon come across some news items like this :” Laboratory trials going on for finding easy methods of transporting water to scarcity hit areas in our country…” or “Kingfisher-to install first Mineral Water plant on the Moon in 2020 !”

4.We may hear some comedy/romantic/thriller films titles for our Bollywood films being registered; eg :
“Jab We Landed on Moon”,
“Ek Glass Chandrama Ka Paani “,
“Thakur,Yeh Paani Mujhey Dey Dey !”
“Paani Rey Paani,Hey Meri Naani !”
“Murari Chala Chand Par Paani Peeney “
“Jugg Waaley Paaniaayan Ley Jayengey !”

5.Some tregedy film titles too;eg :
 ” Hai Ri Kismat, Ek Glass Chand Ka Paani Naa Milla !”
” Kaash-Chand Par Madhuri Dixit Rehti !! ” (aur wahan ka
   paani peeti ) !”
” Hai Ri Dayiiya ! Kya Jullam Bhaiyya ! Chand Par Challi
   Naiyya !”

6. A news  item in near future may read like this : “Opened in New Delhi- a school to teach students to fly to the moon like the witches on brooms, and come back safely with a bucket of water. Guaranteed results or 50% fee refund !”

7.Girls will now put their lover boys to test : “Go fetch a glass of water for me from the moon first !”

8.Gulzar and Javed Akhtar may start penning songs like :
“Teri Aankhon Ka Paani,
  Oh meri Rani,
  Chaand Key Paani Sey
  Badda Mehnga Hai Jaani !”

9.Scholars/writers/novelists, will start writing best sellers with titles like this :

a) Sidney Sheldon : ” Mistress Of Moon Water”
b) Chetan Bhagat :” The Fourth Mistake of My Life-
    Why I didn’t book a plot on the moon !”
c) Arvind Adiga : ” The Whitest Water on Moon “
d) P.Coelho : ” The Winner Gets Moon Water !”

10.Lullabyes on Chanda Mama and stories for children will now become more interesting with mysteries related to water on the moon being added !

11. On Karva Chauth,instead of glancing at the moon, the wives will use telescopes and other scientific devices to see the lakes of water on the moon and will break their fast with packaged moon water ! Wow ! Marketting Companies-are you listening ?

So dear friends,what is your take ?? Let your imagination run riot !!

E..N..J..O..Y !!
