MOST POWERFUL WOMEN.

MOST POWERFUL WOMEN.

Here is my letter to the Editor of BUSINESS TODAY.

Dear Sir,

This refers to your special women issue (BT 31st August 2014). Congratulations to the BT Team for giving us readers, a visually delightful and power packed issue! Yes indeed it is a Collectors’ Issue!

The line-up of the MOST POWERFUL WOMEN as selected by your eminent Jury (incidentally all 3 were MEN!) was awesome and the entire brigade of beauty and / or brains deserved to be included in your exalted list by virtue of their sheer performance in their respective fields, perseverance to forge ahead in spite of obstacles and a pragmatic approach to day-to-day problems. They all deserve a 21 guns salute! (Independence Day time, dear!)

Working doggedly on this voluminous issue for only around 4 months from April onwards, the role of your Assistant Editor, Sarika Malhotra, in giving birth to a very healthy, loveable, bonny baby (which normally takes 9 months!) of an issue, was equally powerful! Kudos to her!

Being associated with the educational field now, I have strongly recommended to all my students to buy and read this issue, so that they can get a glimpse of what it takes to be an achiever and what qualities makes one really powerful in one’s chosen field / career. Hope the present generation takes a lesson from these MPW and makes an honest attempt to shine amidst highly competitive times and justifies once again the truth behind “survival of the fittest” theory of Darwin!

Sheryl Sandberg

SHERYL SANDBERG

The cover story on the COO of Facebook in Business Today of 17th August was very interesting. This is what I wrote to the Editor by way of my Letter to the magazine:

Dear Sir,
This refers to your enchanting cover-story on Sheryl Sandberg (BT 17TH August).
This Cool COO of Facebook is an excellent role model for our female wannabees yearning to make it to the top of MNCs and Indian Companies through grit and determination. That she is the ONLY woman on Facebook’s board, is an acknowledgement of her qualifications, experience and expertise in the field.
Excellent credentials of this high achiever reveal that she is not just a pretty face but also a highly intelligent and focused person as well. Sheryl Sandberg certainly does not build ‘SAND’-castles but knows how to ‘CEMENT’ her relationship with India’s huge but still highly under-explored market and hopes for CONCRETE profitability results in near future!
Her statement that ‘ the next billion FB users are going to come from India’ needs to be taken seriously and conveys how well prepared she is to take the plunge into hitherto un-explored and un-tapped market of our country. Her adamant “fire-in-the-belly” quality to take Facebook to the top, may be well termed as “Face-Bookh (Hindi word for hunger)”!!
Sheryl will certainly be closely watched by all—individuals, institutions, investors etc. Her recent meeting and exchange of thoughts on governance through social media with the PM Narendra Modi, augur well for the growth and expansion of Facebook.

FEEDBACK TO BUSINESS TODAY

FEEDBACK TO BUSINESS TODAY

The Best Companies To Work For

In the BT issue dated 3rd August 2014, there was a survey about the best companies to work for. Here is what I had written to BT as my feedback to the cover story:

Dear Sir,

This refers to your EXCELLENT Cover Story and survey about “The Best Companies To Work For” (BT 3rd August 2014 ).

The survey has aptly highlighted the reasons why companies like Google, Accenture, TCS, Microsoft and IBM (the Top Five) are preferred compared to others.

While the survey does list and rank the companies as per its findings, it is felt that some of the important features that employees look for in a good company, are not adequately dealt with.

Some of the things that employees generally look for in a company, besides of course the compensation package, are: purpose, goals, responsibilities, autonomy, flexibility, attention, opportunities for innovation, open-minded-ness and transparency. Being happy in a work place and getting ample challenging experiences are also equally important. In today’s competitive scenario, it is also essential to know if the company cares about its brand and does it believe in marketing. Whether the company clearly defines and communicates its mission and vision statements, indicates its seriousness in the business arena.
Knowing whether the company engages in social media like Twitter and Facebook is also relevant in today’s business environment. For new entrants, it would be also enlightening to know about the company’s internal  culture, so that they can be sure of fitting in there.
Today’s job aspirants also look for constant recognition of their good work through incentives and awards. Above all, it is also essential to find out if the company has a comprehensive performance management system to track the progress of its employees.

However, all said and done, BT and its team / partners need to be applauded for their yearly pains-taking initiative to bring to the attention of its readers, recruiters and job seekers a valuable insight into the companies profiled there in. Kudos!

23RD JULY 2014

In the current issue of BT dated 17th August 2014, with Sheryl Sandberg of Face Book fame on the cover, there was a highly abridged and edited version of my letter as under:

Valuable Insights

Your cover story The Best Companies To Work For (August 3) was excellent. It aptly highlighted the reasons why companies like Google, Accenture, TCS, Microsoft and IBM are preferred for employment. However, I felt that some important features employees look for in a good company, were not adequately dealt with in your survey to determine the best companies. Being happy at the work place and getting ample challenging experiences are also important. It is also essential if a company cares about its brand and whether it believes in marketing the brand. For new entrants, it would be also enlightening to know about the company’s internal culture, so that they can be sure of fitting in there.Still the BT team / partners need to be applauded for their yearly pains-taking initiative to bring to the attention of its readers, recruiters and job seekers some valuable insight into the profiles of different companies.
